A Democratic state Senator from Illinois Martin Sandoval held a fundraising event and came under fire for a leaked photo of a protester holding a gun against another protester wearing a Donald Trump mask.
Pointing Fake Gun At Fake Trump
The story became famous because of Max Maxwell’s tweet, where he posted the controversial pictures and said “A political fundraiser for @SenatorSandoval simulates an assassination attempt against a mock @realDonaldTrump decked out in Mexican garb. Looks like a man pointed a fake assault weapon at the fake President to pose for a picture.“
Senator Martin Sandoval represents Illinois’ 11th District, including parts of Chicago. And after the pictures went viral causing the outrage Sandoval apologized for the incident.
According to WCIA, Sandoval said “The incident that took place is unacceptable”. The website further quotes him saying “I don’t condone violence toward the President or anyone else. I apologize that something like this happened at my event.”
Social Media Reaction
The incident became one of the most controversial topics on the internet and sparked outrage on both sides of the political spectrum. This is one of the only times that both Republicans and Democrats are equally disgusted by the images and don’t hold their thoughts to themselves about it, condemning the protestors.
Thus, a Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker said he condemns “actions like the ones displayed in the pictures because they lack the civility our politics demands”.
Many Twitter users share the same thoughts about the incident. One user wrote “This is horrible @SecretService talk about inciting violence” and another posted “That is disgusting! As a responsible gun owner the first thing WE learn is fake, real, loaded, unloaded, toy or not, you NEVER point a weapon at another person. The fact that it is a Trump mask should be investigated and prosecuted by @SecretService! #DemocratViolence”.
